In 1996, Sister Margaret Regina Murphy was urged by the Spirit to do something to help the hungry, homeless, sick or those in need of clothing. Her thoughts turned to what she could do to impact these lives. She liked to make candy and she began her ministry in the convent kitchen at St. Mary and Elizabeth Hospital where she lived. Within a year, she had outgrown the space and with the assistance of Sister Donna Kenny, Director of Mission at the hospital, she moved to the CANDY HOUSE on LaSalle Ave near the hospital. There, assisted by Sister Mary James Corey and an array of volunteers, this cottage industry grew into what it is today.
Upon Sister Margaret Regina’s retirement, Sister Mary James replaced her until her own retirement in 2013. Now, a committee of volunteers oversees the day to day operations of the mission facility. After two years searching for a replacement location, the candy house has relocated at St. Simon and Jude campus. We have renovated space, doubling our area for operations and are again making candy to support the mission of Sister Margaret.
